Is plastic wrap waterproof?

In daily kitchen life, plastic wrap is almost an essential tool for storing food, preventing odors from mixing, and keeping food fresh. However, many people have doubts about one of the most basic physical properties of plastic wrap—its waterproofness. Is plastic wrap waterproof? Most food-grade plastic wrap has excellent waterproof properties, but different materials strike different balances between "waterproof" and "breathable."

Plastic wrap is essentially a plastic film whose main function is to block moisture and prevent direct contact between air and food.

High-quality plastic wrap can effectively prevent moisture evaporation and maintain the original moisture of food, which is itself a manifestation of waterproof ability. For example, some high-quality plastic wraps have shown excellent anti-fogging properties in tests, allowing water droplets to automatically disperse, maintaining the transparency of the packaging and the freshness of the food.

Material differences determine performance: PE plastic film, PVC, and PVDC

The mainstream plastic wraps on the market are mainly divided into three categories: PE (polyethylene), PVC (polyvinyl chloride), and PVDC (polyvinylidene chloride).

  • PE (Polyethylene) plastic wrap: Offers excellent waterproof and breathable properties, making it particularly suitable for packaging fresh fruits and vegetables. "Breathable" here refers to allowing a small amount of water vapor to pass through, while providing excellent protection against liquid water.

  • PVDC (Polyvinyl Chloride) plastic wrap: Known for its superior preservation and ability to prevent moisture evaporation, its waterproof and sealing properties are generally even better, making it more suitable for packaging cooked foods and meats.

Early plastic films (such as PVDC) were even used to make waterproof and rustproof military materials. Their waterproof capabilities are extremely strong, with tightly bonded molecules that make it difficult for even air and water to penetrate.

The key to preservation: Balancing "waterproof" and "breathable"

While the waterproofness of plastic wrap is important, the secret to food preservation lies in finding the balance between waterproofness and breathability:

  • High waterproof/low breathable (e.g., PVDC): Focuses on locking in the food's own moisture and preventing evaporation, suitable for foods that easily lose moisture (such as cooked foods and meats).

  • Moderately waterproof/moderately breathable (e.g., PE plastic film): This type of film prevents external moisture from entering while allowing food to breathe, making it suitable for fresh fruits and vegetables and preventing spoilage caused by condensation inside the film.

How to choose the right PE plastic film for your needs

As an everyday item, the waterproof capability of plastic film is an inherent characteristic, effectively locking in moisture. When choosing, select the appropriate material based on the characteristics of different foods:

  • Fruits and vegetables: PE plastic film is recommended, offering a balance of waterproofing and breathability.

  • Cooked food and meat: PVDC plastic film is recommended for its superior waterproofing and sealing effect.

Special reminder: When purchasing any plastic film product, always look for products labeled "food grade" to ensure the material is safe and compliant with regulations.
